Part of our ongoing series of live recordings of stage shows from the National Theatre, Hansard is a new play by first-time writer Simon Woods starring Olivier Award-winners Lindsay Duncan (Birdman, About Time) and Alex Jennings (The Lady in the Van, The Queen), about a Conservative MP and his wife who have a secret that both connects and divides them.

Taking its name from the official written record of everything said in parliament, Hansard looks behind the spoken words at the reasons that underlie them, and the motivations that drive our actions.

Set in the year 1988, Robin Heskreth (Jennings) has just returned to his estate in the Cotswolds from parliament where the Tory government have just passed into law section 28, banning the promotion of homosexuality in schools. His wife (Duncan) has a stinking hangover and is less than thrilled to see him. Marital bickering soon begins to take on a frostier edge as long buried truths start to be uncovered.

With more than a passing nod to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Woods’ play is both funny and acerbic as well as touching and revelatory, featuring an incredible double-hander from its charismatic leads.
