Despite being less than 20 years old, Ron Howard and Jim Carrey’s take on Dr Seuss’s beloved story has already become a holiday favourite. As the cheerfully inane Whos of Whoville scramble to outdo each other in celebrating Christmas, the brilliantly sour Grinch (Carrey) sulks in his mountain-cave lair, driven well past distraction by the light and noise and with only his hapless dog Max for company.
Pushed to the breaking point after years of exile and humiliation, he vows to pillage Christmas from the town entirely, hijacking Santa’s role and stealing every trace of the celebration. At the same time, however, guileless six-year-old Cindy Lou Who learns the Grinch’s true nature and sets out to show him and Whoville the real value of the holiday. Faithfully replicating both the colourful curving visuals and warm seasonal sentiment of the original story, the film stands out through its take on the title character, an unforgettable mix of uncanny monster makeup and Carrey’s mercurial comic energy. Reportedly, combining the two was such an agonising process that Carrey relied on the soothing tones of the Bee Gees to help him through the filming process.
