Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream builds on the explosive success of his immersive staging of Julius Caesar in 2018.
A feuding forest King and Queen chance upon four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors rehearsing a play. As a quarrel between them intensifies, the enchanted royal couple meddle with mortals, administering their magic with dark but hilarious consequences. The Bridge Theatre transforms into a hazy delusion of flying fairies, contagious fogs and moonlit revellers, enveloped by the meandering audience pursuing the amusements on foot.
The abundance of creativity exhibited in the fabrication of the show uses music, dance and stagecraft to create a vision of transgressive passion, realised with technical wizardry. Bunny Christie’s set boasts airborne beds and soaring silk swings, while Arlene Phillips and Lennin Nelson-McClure create eye-catching gymnastics and ear-nibbling, high-wire antics as Movement Director and Circus Captain.
This irreverent interpretation has the atmosphere of a party, creating a sense of mischief that spreads like a giant smile. Poking fun at the vogue for immersive theatre, the genre’s potential for delirious disarray is embraced to provoke a playful charm - perfect for the festive season!
