Combining a resonant true story of modern urban life with luminous visual artistry, Joe Talbot’s debut and Sundance success is certain to invite awards prestige.
Rootless young man Jimmie Fails drifts around San Francisco with his playwright friend Mont, watching the city become developed to the point of disappearing and fought over by those who love it. A chance to connect with the richer, less alien past comes when the immaculate Victorian house Jimmie grew up in becomes empty during a bureaucratically convoluted change of ownership. Jimmie and Mont relish the chance to reclaim their time and place and share it with their neighbours, but the idyll cannot last, and reconciling the different sides and stories of the city becomes more pressing than ever.
Based on the real experiences of its star and writers, Talbot and Fails illuminate the all-too-relevant struggles of preserving meaning and identity in a vanishing home with a lyrical, kinetic sense of style. Neither a flat slice of realism nor an airy aesthetic exercise, the film shines with a belief in art’s power to revive faded histories and unite fractured societies.
