Directed by Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Mr Holmes) this Hitchcockian tale of double-crossings and duplicity has more twists than a snake with an itch.

It is a well-known fact that people are never 100% honest about themselves in online dating profiles, be it a slightly more flattering photo from a few years ago, a bolstered resumé, or a feigned interest in physical activity. However, roguish old charmer Roy Courtnay (Ian Mckellen) has more to hide than most with his courtship of millionaire widow Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren).

“You bloody bet I’m going to take it all.” Confesses Roy to his partner in crime Vincent (Jim Carter, Downton Abbey) as they plan Roy’s attempt to worm his way into her affections. But all is not necessarily what it seems and perhaps Betty is not the only one being deceived.

Delightfully over the top, with more than a hint of the Patricia Highsmith, the two leads are clearly having the time of their lives sparking off each other in this delicious contemporary thriller that will leave you guessing until the last reel.
