LAUREL & HARDY'S WAY OUT WEST (65mins)
+ SHORT (29mins)
Film run time: 1h 34m
You’ve seen the biopic, now catch the real thing - Stan & Ollie doing what they do best in their classic 1937 comedy.
Arguably the duo’s most famous outing, Way Out West. follows Laurel & Hardy as they attempt to deliver the deed for a gold mine to its heir. However, when a conniving bar owner and his wife hear of the lucrative deed, plans are set in motion to dupe the boys and make off with the property.
The film features the unforgettable dance sequence to ‘At the Ball, That’s All’ (perfectly re-enacted by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly in the recent Stan & Ollie).
The influence of this film and indeed their entire career can be seen in countless works of film and television: Hardy’s exasperated glances to camera wouldn’t look out of place in The Office; and the teams behind Monty Python and The Simpsons owe a great deal to the slapstick humour and pratfalls of the twosome.
Pay a visit to The Odyssey this Easter Monday to honour their legacy, and if you don’t enjoy yourself – in the immortal words of Stan Laurel – “I’ll eat your hat!”
