Shot with a painter’s eye, Oscar-nominee Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell & the Butterfly and Basquiat) does wonderful justice to the great Vincent van Gogh. One of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art, he produced thousands of paintings and drawings in just over a decade.
At Eternity’s Gate focuses on the prolific painter’s agonising final years living in Arles, France. Dafoe delivers a stunning portrayal, immersing himself in the life of the artist: learning to paint, reading his letters and placing himself within the frame of several of van Gogh’s most recognisable locations.
Vincent’s younger brother Theo (Rupert Friend), an art dealer who sends a monthly allowance, shows up whenever his brother finds himself in hospital. His unfailing emotional and financial support provides a stark contrast to his turbulent relationship with fellow artist Paul Gaugin (Oscar Isaac), simultaneously a close friend and rival.
The minimalist piano score from composer Tatiana Lisovskaya blends with Benoît Delhomme’s gorgeous cinematography to great effect.
Dafoe’s performance, which rightly earned him his Best Actor Oscar nomination, demands to be seen.
