Step into the lovingly crafted and beautifully hand drawn world of Studio Ghibli’s 9th feature film. A world of gods and monsters, spirits and demons, folklore and history.

When his village is threatened by a giant rampaging boar, young Ashitaka takes on the monster single-handed and, though successful, pays a high price for his bravery. An infection in his arm will spread to the rest of his body if he doesn’t seek out a cure. And so starts an adventure that pulls Ashitaka into the battle between humans and the mythical creatures of the forest.

Director Hayao Miyazaki sets his story during the Muromachi period of Japanese history (14th - 16th century), a time of industrial and cultural growth which permanently altered the country’s formerly harmonious cohabitation with nature, and Princess Mononoke is both his most mature and political film. Nature is portrayed as both beautiful and dangerous, ethereal but vengeful.

This is also one of Studio Ghibli’s finest looking films with intricately drawn scenes of stunning landscapes, of shadows and light playing on objects, of wind in the grass and translucent beings.

A film with visuals as rich and complex as the subject matter, darkness and beauty in equal measure.
