Keira Knightley brings life and warmth to a sombre post-war romance about shared loss and potential healing through love.

Still aching from the death of her son, Rachael Morgan (Knightley) travels to a Hamburg—only just liberated from the crushing weight of Nazism—to join her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a kind but overburdened colonel struggling to reconstruct the city. Thanks to Lewis’s dogged decency, the couple’s home in the city is shared with its former owner, architect Stefan Lubert (Alexander Skarsgård), along with rebellious daughter Freda. As Rachael is further distanced from her husband by his impossible responsibilities and Stefan is unjustly brought under fire for his suspected links to the Party, the pair find solace in each other’s company, and, through the resulting affair, a chance to properly mend their shattered inner lives.

Adapted from best-selling novel by the director of Testament of Youth, the film does not hide the melodrama that drives its story, but roots it in an interesting point in history - where both buildings and people need to be rebuilt from the ground up - and enlivens it through sensitive and intelligent performances from the leads.
