This heart-warming tale of love, loss and friendship is back on our big screen for its 30th anniversary and here for Mother’s Day.
Annelle (Daryl Hannah), a young beautician, finds work at the local salon in a small Louisiana town. She is welcomed into a tight-knit group of women, at the centre of which is newly married and glowingly pregnant Shelby Eatenton (Julia Roberts). Terrified at the thought of her daughter’s diabetes making childbirth potentially life-threatening, M'Lynn Eatenton (Sally Field) seeks comfort in her closest friends. Together, they use laughter to find the strength to battle their deepest fears of death and join Shelby in celebrating new life, growing ever closer as they encounter tragedy and good fortune along the way.
Complete with Southern drawls a-plenty (mostly thanks to Dolly Parton as Truvy), Steel Magnolias is at heart a complex portrayal of female friendships that is sure to make you laugh and cry. The main ensemble are as profound as they are hilarious, coming out with brilliant off-the-cuff salon philosophy.
A real triumph from director Herbert Ross that deserves to be revisited again and again.
