Part of the ‘A Cinematic Odyssey: Postcards from Europe’ strand.

French critics have suggested that with Le grand bain, actor/director Gilles Lellouche is giving us his version of The Full Monty.

Where the British film gave us unemployment, social critique and redemption through rehearsals for an all-male striptease routine, the French film gives us something similar but this time in the form of a synchronised swimming contest.

Both films present us with emasculated forty-something men who seek meaning in their lives through participation in public events that require a commitment to literal, as well as emotional and creative, exposure.

Lellouche’s funny, yet tender and at times pensive third film benefits from a cast of heavyweight actors. These include the ever-excellent Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), Guillaume Canet (The Beach), Jean-Hugues Anglade (Betty Blue) and the veteran comic Benoit Poelvoorde (The Brand New Testament), with the friendships in the film reflecting the real-life camaraderie of the stars.

The film will be introduced by Dr Paul Sutton, who will stay for the end of the film for a post-screening discussion in the front-tier of the downstairs seating area.
