Taking the reins from Michael Bay, Travis Knight departs from his predecessor’s effects-driven style to deliver what critics are calling the best Transformers film yet.

Set twenty years before the last instalment, Bumblebee follows Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld), a teenage girl coming to terms with her father’s death. On her eighteenth birthday, Charlie stumbles across a yellow Volkswagen beetle in her uncle’s scrapyard, and, finding herself drawn to the car, drives it home. When she tries to repair it, the seemingly unremarkable vehicle suddenly transforms into a huge robot (voiced by Dylan O’Brien). Dubbing the mighty yet timid machine Bumblebee, the pair become firm friends. But as she unearths more of the robot’s past, alien hunter Colonel Jack Burns (John Cena) closes in and Charlie winds up embroiled in an interstellar conspiracy that endangers the Earth itself.

As with previous instalments, Bumblebee boasts impressive visuals and exciting action sequences. But Knight’s new entry is unique. Its titular CGI hero is brimming with personality and the relationship he forges with Steinfeld makes for a compelling story that will win plenty of new converts, alongside the spectacular robot mashups that made the franchise popular.
