December 2018 saw the 50th Anniversary of this classic Children’s musical adventure film, loosely based on Ian Fleming’s novel and written by Roald Dahl.

Dick Van Dyke plays Caractacus Potts, an oddball inventor and widowed father to the adorable Jeremy and Jemima, who one day while bunking off school meet Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), who falls for Potts and his inventions.

For his greatest invention, Potts buys an old grand prix car and turns it into a car that can drive, float and fly. Six cars were made for the film, however, only one was fully functional, even hitting 120mph when driven by Graham Hill. The car was bought at auction for $805,000 by director Peter Jackson, who uses it to raise money for charity at air shows.

The most memorable part of the film, apart from the car itself, are the musical numbers, written by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, famous for the songs from Mary Poppins. Just thinking about the title song, ‘Truly Scrumptious’, or ‘Me Ol’ Bamboo’ has them stuck in your head for days, but seeing the sequences on the big screen is magical.
