Here is a comedy-drama which somehow lands plenty of laughs, while simultaneously telling the story of a man with a dark legacy.
That man is Dick Cheney, the most powerful vice president in American history, portrayed by a prosthetics-laden Christian Bale with superb under-the-radar menace.
From early on in the film he moulds the mind of President George W. ‘Dubya’ Bush (played by the sensational Sam Rockwell). “I can handle the more mundane jobs: overseeing bureaucracy, military, energy, and foreign policy.” In other words… let me run the country for you.
Amy Adams stars as a disconcertingly cheerful Lynne Cheney, who joins Bale in breaking the fourth wall with spectacular effect, while LisaGay Hamilton delivers an uncanny performance as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, another fascinating figure from the Bush administration.
Getting his start as a writer on Saturday Night Live, before moving on to his incredibly quotable Anchorman films, and the excellent and acerbically witty The Big Short, Adam McKay placed himself in good stead to direct the sharpest satire of the year.
Vice is a real power play at work - duly nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
