A much-anticipated period drama set at the height of Tulipmania in 17th Century Amsterdam.

We follow orphaned Sophia (Alicia Vikander) from her life in a convent to her loveless marriage to the peppercorn magnate Cornelis (Christoph Waltz). Cornelis is desperate for an heir, and she is desperate to give him one to ensure her siblings’ passage to New Amsterdam (soon to be modern New York). Unable to conceive, he commissions a portrait of his wife so that at least some legacy remains. Naturally, she and the artist (Dane DeHaan) embark on a passionate affair. Sophia has to come up with a more cunning plan to satisfy her nobleman spouse, and an unexpected scandal between her maid (Holliday Grainger) and the fishmonger (Jack O’Connell) appears to provide a solution.

‘Fever’ is definitely the right word— both to describe the rapidly escalating economic bubble of Tulip speculators and the deliciously unfolding events in their lives. Director Justin Chadwick is no stranger to a corseted drama, having directed the equally enthralling The Other Boleyn Girl, and this one is definitely up to the mark.

Wrought with passion and twists that make it feel fresh despite its historical setting— come see it in bloom.
