BAFTA-nominated director, Tim Wardle, documents a case so bizarre it defies belief.

When Bobby Shafran starts university, total strangers keep calling him Eddy and chatting to him in oddly familiar tones. Confused, he investigates and soon discovers another student who looks so similar to him they must be twins. A local paper runs an article about the coincidence, leading another young man, David, to realise that he is the third triplet in the trio, separated at birth for reasons unknown. The story is a global sensation. The brothers become celebrities and even open a restaurant together. But as they dig deeper into their past and uncover the circumstances of their separation, this innocently quirky tale takes an unsettling turn.

Wardle brilliantly captures the triplets’ bafflement with tasteful reconstructions of the lead-up to their reunion. The subjects’ own contributions then aid the transition from feel-good interest piece to dark investigative filmmaking, as they reveal the reality behind their smiling TV personas. The first half of the film alone would make for an engrossing watch. But taken as a whole, it leaves you pondering the nature-nurture debate, its impact on our morality and our power to determine who we are.
