The English language debut from Sebastián Lelio, director of Academy Award winning A Fantastic Woman, is a not-so-textbook tale of forbidden love within the strict boundaries of religion.
Following the death of her estranged father, Ronit (Rachel Weisz) returns to the same orthodox Jewish community that had shunned her decades earlier. Abandoning her fashionable, bohemian lifestyle— and the freedom that came with it— she is immediately plunged into various ceremonies which are the epitome of religious obedience she so wanted to get away from. Her untenable teenage love affair with the devout Esti (Rachel McAdams) is secretly revived, hidden from Esti’s husband Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), a respected rabbi, and the rest of the community as a whole. The scandal is turbulent, breathing a new independence into Esti but also creating a rift between not only her and her spouse but also her religious convictions.
Lelio’s portrayal is deeply empathetic to the ways in which repressive societies put women in impossible binds— a running theme throughout his work. Danny Cohen’s cinematography is muted and the drama is expertly controlled. “Richly satisfying and powerfully acted work” (The Guardian) — not to be missed.
