Now 64 years old, Irving Berlin's perennially amiable festive musical finally arrives at The Odyssey.
After one saves the life of the other in the last days of WWII, army friends Bob (Bing Crosby) and Phil (Danny Kaye) combine their talents to become famous musical performers, before eventually flagging from demand and repetition.
Before long, two meetings en-route to a wintry inn in Vermont revive their interest: first with the Haynes Sisters, two musically talented siblings (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen), and then a reunion with their beloved former general (Dean Jagger), now the inn's owner, who is losing business due to a lack of snow.
Eager to save their old overseer and each becoming further entangled with the Haynes Sisters, the pair pool their theatrical resources to put on a musical spectacular at the inn, hoping to reunite the general with his other faithful subordinates and save his business.
The film's sentimental and undemanding story does not detract from Berlin's excellent musical numbers (including the famous title song) and the vivid Technicolor cinematography.
White Christmas provides an undemanding warmth and cosiness in no small measure.
