Renowned director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and novelist Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) unite for a sweeping, ambitious heist film supplying both visceral thrills and understated drama.

During an intense election battle in Chicago, teacher Veronica Rawlins (Viola Davis) is abruptly thrown into the deep end when her husband (Liam Neeson), a professional thief, is killed after stealing from an up and coming crime boss-turned-politician, Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry). Forcibly charged with recovering the money within a set time limit, Veronica turns to the other stranded former wives of her husband's crew (Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki), and quickly assembles a plan to restage the mission, while shadowed by both Manning's sinister enforcer (Daniel Kaluuya) and her own unresolved personal demons.

While not refraining from high stakes and tense, electrifyingly practical chase scenes, McQueen and Flynn do not shy away from fleshing out the familiar genre, incorporating feminist subtext, incisive political commentary and a subtle but affecting study of grief from Davis into the traditional heist plot.

In giving the audience both low action and high emotion, the film triumphantly has its cake and eats it.
