Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, directors of Chocolat and Jumanji, merge their creative powers to produce an otherworldly reimagining of the beloved Nutcracker fairytale.
Clara (Mackenzie Foy) is hunting for a key to the egg-shaped box she inherited from her late mother. On Christmas Eve, her godfather Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman), gives her a clue in the form of a magical string. But when she eagerly follows its path, she somehow emerges in a strange, parallel world inhabited by living toys and vicious, warrior-mice. The world is divided into three realms, the Land of Flowers, the Land of Snowflakes and the Land of Sweets. After Clara learns from the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley) that there is a Fourth Realm, ruled by the evil Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), she teams up with Philip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a living nutcracker toy, and sets off for the dark land to recover her key and finally unite the realms.
Foy is impressive in her first principal role, while Knightley steals the show as the cloyingly sweet Sugar Plum. With bold inventiveness, Hallström and Johnston combine these fun performances with stunning visual effects to create a spectacularly refreshing revamp.
