The legendary late actor Harry Dean Stanton (also seen on Twin Peaks: The Return) gives his last performance in an understated but moving and funny character study.

At ninety years old, military veteran Lucky lives a small but contented life, restricting his circle to only essential, familiar places, people, and actions. Unapologetically atheist, Lucky struggles to find consolation from his own impending death, and comes to find it in the people around him, both familiar and unfamiliar.

Though the film lacks solid plot, fellow supporting actor turned director John Carroll Lynch finds power in small gestures and details, faithfully observing a visibly frail but eloquent Stanton and his neighbours without resorting to melodrama or complication.

Of the rest of the cast, the standout is Stanton's long-time collaborator David Lynch, who obsesses over a fugitive pet Tortoise named after Teddy Roosevelt. Though the preparing-for-death plot and American small town setting are familiar, the film recommends itself through Stanton's stature: every line of his face suggests experience and character with no need for dialogue.
