It’s Jason Statham versus the Megalodon, the largest shark ever known, previously thought to be extinct. A recipe for B-movie heaven? That capital ‘b’ could potentially outsize the shark, in this rollicker from Jon Turteltaub, the director who brought us Cool Runnings and National Treasure.
We’ve only just had Rampage, another giant critter thriller, but there’s always plenty more fish in the sea. The fish in question here, is discovered by Jonas Taylor (Statham) and the rescue team he is leading, attempting to save sailors who are trapped in a sunk submarine. Taylor’s claims that the sinking has been caused by a giant sea creature are initially dismissed — but he and his team experience ‘The Meg’ first hand on another mission. As the beast begins making its way towards land, they realise it is down to them to prevent a massacre.
Believe it or not, this movie is a novel adaption — Walt Disney acquired the film rights to the film shortly after the release and subsequent success of Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, but it had been stuck in ‘development hell’, until resurfacing in 2015.
Come along, harpoon in hand.
