The first of Tim Burton's many yet uniquely strange comedy-horror-fantasies (apart from Pee Wee's Big Adventure) returns in time for Halloween.

When newlyweds Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) are abruptly killed in an accident, they are condemned by a bizarre yet bureaucratic afterlife to stay in their house for 125 years, just as it is snapped up in their absence by a smug developer (Jeffrey Jones), his neurotic wife Delia (Catherine O'Hara), and their sullen goth daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder).

Proving too nice to scare away the family themselves, the Maitland’s seek help in the form of Betelgeuse (pronounced like the title) an unscrupulous and foul-minded "bio-exorcist" who quickly sets his sights on Lydia, and escape to the real world. Despite it being only his second film, the director's famous tropes emerge in full and exciting force: uninhibited fantasy (expressed through practical yet imaginative and convincing special effects) mixes with both gentle horror (though some moments are outright terrifying) and equally creative comedy (as seen in the famously incongruous use of Harry Belafonte music).
