With the wonderful announcement last year that Studio Ghibli’s hiatus is over, and new film, How Do You Live?, is on the way, what a perfect time (not that you ever need an excuse) to celebrate and screen the timeless My Neighbour Totoro.
When discussing the overwhelming success of animation giants, Studio Ghibli, you could never leave My Neighbour Totoro out of that conversation. It is a film that quickly began amassing a worldwide cult following in the years after its release, and the titular Totoro is very much a cultural icon.
The story follows a professor who moves house (with his two young daughters) to be nearer his wife, who is recovering from an illness in hospital. Set in post-war rural Japan, one of the girls, Mei, befriends the nearby forest’s spirit creatures, particularly the cuddly (yet-large) Totoro.
The legendary Terry Gilliam chose the film as number one on his greatest animations of all-time list, and if you come see it in its full colourful glory on our big screen, you’ll find it hard not to agree with him.
