After stunning critics with the Oscar-winning Room, Lenny Abrahamson finally returns with this macabre adaptation of Sarah Waters’ best-selling novel.

Two years have passed since the defeat of Nazi Germany. Dr Faraday (Domhnall Gleeson), a self-made man from a working-class background, is summoned to Hundreds Hall to treat lord of the manor Roderick Ayres (Will Poulter), a disfigured veteran freighted with nightmarish memories of the war. Faraday dismisses Roderick’s ranting about supernatural forces as evidence of his psychological trauma. But as the young doctor learns more from Mrs Ayres (Charlotte Rampling) and her daughter Caroline (Ruth Wilson), he finds it increasingly difficult to reason away his patient’s ‘delusions’.

Abrahamson draws inspiration from Gothic masters Henry James and Edgar Allen Poe, forgoing jump-scares and gore in favour of a creeping fear that constantly subverts expectations. Gleeson, as the stubborn rationalist, and Wilson, as the enigmatic heiress, also deliver complex performances that mirror the psychological depth of the original novel.

The Little Stranger is as much about the darkness of the human mind as it is about ghosts and haunted mansions. Its chilling atmosphere, eerie, dilapidated sets and impressive cast combine to create a uniquely intelligent horror experience.
