Bart Layton, renowned for his true crime story, The Imposter, repurposes his extraordinary powers as a documentarian to bring us this inventive twist on the classic heist movie.

Spencer Reinhard (Barry Keoghan) struggles through university, directionless and disturbed by his life’s apparent lack of meaning. But after discovering that Transylvania University’s library houses a copy of James Audubon’s The Birds of America, one of the nation’s most valuable books, he begins to wonder whether stealing it may give his life purpose. Egged on by his rebellious fellow student Warren (Evan Peters), Reinhard enlists the help of two more friends, Erik (Jared Abrahamson) and Chas (Blake Jenner), and soon embarks on a path that will culminate in one of the strangest heists in US history.

Layton seamlessly blends dramatized scenes with real-life interviews, creating a narrative that is in turns funny, moving and compelling. Meanwhile, Keoghan, as the brooding anti-hero, and Peters, as his intense and unpredictable enabler, brilliantly capture the feelings of youthful alienation that drive their hare-brained plot.

Anne Nikitin’s dark, propulsive score adds the final element, transforming this all-too-often clichéd genre into a thoughtful meditation on restlessness, masculinity and angst.
