The highest grossing film of the 1980s, and considered to be one of the greatest of all time. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial was only surpassed as the highest grossing film ever in 1993, by Jurassic Park, another Spielberg film.

E.T. was actually based on Spielberg’s imaginary alien friend, which he created to cope with the divorce of his parents as a child. He developed this into a story with the film’s writer, Melissa Mathision, who wrote a script in just eight weeks, which Spielberg said was “perfect”.

Aliens are visiting California, but become spooked when government agents appear on the scene and flee in their spaceship, having left one of their own behind. The stranded alien (voiced by Pat Walsh) goes to hide in a nearby garden shed, only to be discovered by Elliott (Henry Thomas). After the initial shock, the two become friends, and Elliott attempts to integrate E.T. into his family life.

E.T. is another legendary collaboration between Spielberg and composer John Williams — you really do want to see the former’s visuals, and hear the latter’s spectacular music on our big screen and speakers.
