A visually stunning black and white love story set in 1940s Communist Poland, loosely inspired by the lives of director Paweł Pawlikowski’s parents.

The country’s new regime attempts to reconnect with its rural citizens by recruiting them to perform traditional dances and songs, and then, of course, use them for propaganda. The brooding, darkly handsome pianist and composer Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) is one of those doing the choosing, and it’s Zula (Joanna Kulig) that catches his eye. With some quick investigatory work from his colleagues, it comes to light that she is no innocent country girl, and is actually on parole after murdering her father— a fact that makes Wiktor instantly magnetically drawn to her. A whirlwind tour around Europe sees them part ways and meet again in an intimate, passionate portrayal of romance against the backdrop of the Iron Curtain.

Following Pawlikowski’s Oscar-winning Ida in 2013, Cold War is another impressive film under his belt, bagging him the title of Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018— and for good reason, too. “Visually, you’re unlikely to see a more beautiful film this year” (The Guardian). Przyjdź i zobacz (Come and see).
