With a short intro from Peter Segal, co-founder of St Albans Friends of Palestine.

The Speed Sisters are the first all-women race car driving team in the Middle East. Grabbing headlines and turnings heads at improvised tracks across the West Bank, these five women have sped their way into the heart of the gritty, male-dominated Palestinian street car-racing scene.

Despite a tangle of roadblocks and checkpoints, this thriving racing scene has emerged in the occupied West Bank. The races offer a release from the pressures and uncertainties of life under military occupation.

Brought together by a common desire to live life on their own terms, the Speed Sisters have joined the ranks of dozens of male drivers competing against each other for the title and to prove that women can go head-to-head with the guys. Because the British Consulate in Jerusalem funded a race car from them, the team decorate their car with both Palestinian and British flags.

From Director Amber Fares, who followed the Speed Sisters for four years; forging a close relationship with each of them and their families. Fares always thought “this story would break many stereotypes about Arab women, even among Arab women themselves. But what I didn’t expect is that it would also have me questioning my own stereotypes with regards to Middle Eastern society and Arab men.”

This daring documentary pushes boundaries and presents a side of the Middle East we rarely get to see in the media.
