Written and directed by French novelist and film-maker Amanda Sthers, the light-hearted “Madame” centres on the social drama around a dinner party and it’s aftermath.
Toni Collette and Harvey Keitel play Anne and Bob, a rich American expat couple living in Paris and straining their considerable resources with an even more considerably lavish lifestyle.
Anne decides to hold a refined soirée for their friends but their son invites himself along making 13 (horrors!) and so Anne recruits her reluctant maid Maria to even the numbers. This neat plan goes awry as Maria not only proves herself to be out of her social depth but then goes on to start a romance with one of the other guests. For Anne this is inexcusable as it breaks rigid class boundaries and emphasises her own dwindling romantic appeal - even dressed sexily (or naked!) she can’t rekindle Bob’s interest.
Collette and Keitel put in fine performances of course but De Rossy threatens to steal the show. Her Maria is played with warmth as well as comedic drama as the three of them set about skewering class differences in this accomplished social satire.
