As battling-against-the-odds-for-survival films go, this one is outstanding.
Right from the start we are thrown in at the deep end with the opening shot showing a battered young woman jerking back into consciousness amongst the floating debris below deck of what remains of her sailing boat.
When she finally manages to claw her way out the camera pans away upwards to show the damaged vessel as a tiny white needle in a truly vast blue haystack.
Oh, and her boyfriend’s missing too.
Based, amazingly, on real events, the background narrative is a passionate love story. Tami (Shailene Woodley) wanders the world until she and Richard (Sam Claflin) find each other and sail off into the sunset and one of the biggest storms ever seen in the Pacific.
As director Baltasar Kormakur showed in “Everest”, determination and an indomitable spirit can overcome extraordinary hardships but here he also shows how Tami and Richard draw on their love in order to endure when faced with despair.
The term ‘truly remarkable ‘is over-used but it’s accurate here - come and see this true tale of love and resilience.
