Four of our country’s most lauded and beloved actresses (Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith, Judy Dench and Aileen Atkins) got together over a weekend for a few cuppas and a bit of a natter. Such is the simple set up of this documentary film, but, with a collective 337 years of life experience, these ‘Dames’ have a rich treasure trove of saucy stories and showbiz anecdotes with which to entertain us.
“The laughter and pure hysteria are infectious in this wildly enjoyable film.” The Guardian.
The director Roger Mitchell (Notting Hill, Enduring Love) was allowed to sit in on what is, apparently, a regular meet up of the old group of best friends who have known and worked with each other for decades, as they discuss shared histories, amusing tales of both stage and screen, the annoyances of getting old and those occasional times when the job hardly seemed worth the reward. Not that there isn’t a joy in airing one’s grievances; as Maggie Smith put it succinctly in an interview with Mark Lawson: “You’re not alone when you moan.”
