Director Andrew Haigh surprised audiences in 2015 when he released 45 Years, the story of a couple celebrating their 45th Wedding Anniversary, a departure from his previous films, Weekend and Greek Pete, both ground-breaking intimate accounts of gay men in Britain.

Now, heading in a new direction, the Yorkshire-born director has gone to rural America to tell the coming-of-age tale of 15-year-old Charley as he and his often-absent father move to Portland. As Charley spends much of his time alone, he finds acceptance and friendship in an aging horse named Lean On Pete.

The star of the film is newcomer Charlie Plummer, who you may remember from recent thriller, All the Money in the World, gives a remarkable performance filled with depth, candour and vulnerability. He truly makes you believe in the relationship between a young boy and a horse.

But this relationship is by no means clichéd, with Haigh himself saying, “It’s not about trying to create a fake connection between the two of them. Charley needs that horse for his own purposes, but the horse is always just a horse. This isn’t Black Beauty”.
