Long before Tim Allen or Richard Attenborough, Edmund Gwenn played the first man to believe he was Santa, in this 1947 classic.
Called up to replace the Santa leading the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade (after he was been found blind drunk), Kris Kringle looks the spitting-image of Santa. He does such a good job he is soon hired as a Santa for Macy’s toy store. Things start to go awry however when Kringle starts to believe he is actually Saint Nick.
Macy’s nasty in-house psychologist (who knew toy stores had one!) wants to lock Kringle away in a mental asylum, and to stay free he has to prove that he is actually Santa. Leading to a shaken New York judicial system and a court case never seen before.
72 year-old Edmund Gwenn won an Oscar for his performance and it’s easy to see why. The film is light, charming and completely captivating!
