Part of the ‘A Cinematic Odyssey: Postcards from Europe’ strand.

The life of restless fisherman Mario Ruoppolo (Massimo Troisi) is forever changed when the poet, activist and literary heartthrob Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret, Cinema Paradiso) is exiled to his island.

Mario takes on the role of Pablo’s private postman, daily delivering bags of love letters from adoring female fans. Slowly a friendship forms between the two men and Neruda starts to help Mario in his courtship of local barmaid Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta).

Filmed on the picturesque island of Procida in the Gulf of Naples in a seemingly endless, lazy summer, British director Michael Radford captured a wonderful sense of unhurried island life in the early 1950s, helped in no small part by the fairytale-like Oscar-winning score of composer Luiz Bacalov (Django Unchained, Kill Bill Vol. 1).

Writer/star Massimo Troisi postponed heart surgery so that he could complete filming. The day after production wrapped he tragically suffered a fatal heart attack. Posthumously he received a best actor nomination.

The film will be introduced by Dr Paul Sutton, who will stay for the end of the film for a post- screening discussion in the auditorium.
