Toilet humour, Roman puns and epic battles: author Terry Deary’s Horrible Histories makes history fun and hilarious once more, this time on the big screen.

Sunderland-born Deary’s quirky and hilarious books have sold over 25 million copies, with countless children taking a much greater interest in history because of them. Director Dominic Brigstocke is perfectly placed, having directed the Horrible Histories TV series, I’m Alan Partridge and The Armstrong and Miller Show.

The story follows the Romans in Britain and the Iceni tribe, led by the fiery Boudicca (Kate Nash). Alexander Armstrong’s Roman leader warns his troops that the tribe leader has “gone loco”, having defeated them in Verulamium (St Albans, of course). Atti (Sebastian Croft), a young Roman, is sent to Britain but is captured upon arrival by Celtic Orla (Emilia Jones). The two grow close, until Atti is returned to his regiment and learns that he is to fight her tribe in the Battle of Watling Street. They’re joined by a plethora of British talent: Derek Jacobi (no stranger to a Roman role), Nick Frost, Warwick Davis and Lee Mack all ensure the comedic quota is in a full tortoise formation.
