Back in 1982, The Muppets creators Frank Oz and Jim Henson joined forces with conceptual designer Brian Froud and puppet sculptor Wendy Froud and set out to create this bold and daring fantasy adventure.


Like all the best Dr Who episodes The Dark Crystal walks the line between being accessible for a family audience and the stuff of childhood nightmares.


Jen, possibly the last of the elf-like Gelflings has been raised by the peaceful urRu. He is entrusted with a mission to restore balance to the fractured world by returning a missing shard to the titular Dark Crystal before the planet’s three suns align. However, there are many dangers along the journey, not least the malevolent Skeksis, a cross between Roald Dahl’s The Witches and a reptilian vulture that live off other creatures by draining them of their ‘essence’.

Since the film was made, a slowly increasing mythology has built up around the world of Thra with various comics and novels expanding the folklore and will result in a 10-part prequel series on Netflix in late August. So be sure to re-introduce yourself to this beautiful dark world.
