Fifty years after the seminal achievement of the moon landings, a new documentary makes the historic spaceflight seem more astonishingly vivid than ever before.

Director Todd Douglas Miller (Dinosaur 13) crafts this impressive undertaking, from a newly discovered trove of 65mm footage, and more than 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings, in collaboration with NASA and the National Archives.

Covering every aspect of the launch and polished to a brilliant sheen, the recordings are so piercingly detailed and immediate that they require no traditional documentary cushions, such as narration or talking heads. Only a rich but unobtrusive soundtrack accompanies the footage, along with contemporary audio interviews with members of the mission.

Neither the astonishing scale and ambition of the launch itself, nor the wonder it inspired among watching crowds, feel dry or distant: even after so much attention and so many different approaches, the film somehow makes an oft-studied and overly familiar event seem awe-inspiring and fresh, while leaving an even greater impression of what was accomplished.
