Described by Variety as “One of the great female-led films of the 21st Century”, Julianne Moore’s Gloria Bell is terrific.

Gloria Bell is the English language remake of Sebastián Lelio’s own Chilean sleeper hit Gloria from 2013. This new incarnation of the film stars Moore as a middle-aged divorcee who spends her, now free, evenings on the many dancefloors of Los Angeles. On one such evening, she meets John Turturro’s Arnold – a 50-something divorcee, (much like herself) – and the pair hit it off.

What’s so fantastic about the film is that it depicts this intersection of two people’s lives whilst being firmly grounded in reality: this isn’t a fairy tale relationship, it’s a barbed, complex minefield. Whilst Gloria has completely cut ties with her own family, Arnold is still under the thumb (both psychologically and financially) of his ex-wife and two daughters – something which causes great arguments between the two.

Propelled along by a pulsating soundtrack of power ballads and club classics and drenched in gorgeous purple-pink hues by the ever-fantastic cinematographer Natasha Braier, Gloria Bell is a proper night out on the town – minus the hangover in the morning.
