If you think an Icelandic-Ukrainian comedy following a bow-and-arrow wielding, environmentalist choir conductor isn’t quite up your street, you might want to think again.
Halla is not happy with the presence of a recently built aluminium plant near her home in the Icelandic highlands. Armed with her trusty longbow, she takes it upon herself to purposely damage electricity pylons to cut the power supply to the plant. While the Icelandic government increase efforts to catch Halla, a long-forgotten application to adopt an orphan child from Ukraine is approved and derails her plans for further illegal and potentially dangerous activism.
Premiering at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and put forward as Iceland’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, Woman at War has turned heads worldwide. In particular, the film’s idiosyncratic star Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir has attracted so much attention, that it was announced that Jodie Foster is to direct and play Halla in an American remake!
Amidst real-world climate emergencies and the rise of environmental activists such as Greta Thunberg and the Extinction Rebellion group, it seems that this film could not have come at a better time.
Fiercely original and effortlessly feel-good.
