Part of the ‘A Cinematic Odyssey: Postcards from Europe’ strand.

Agnès Varda’s eyes and voice enriched cinema with endless inventiveness. The place she occupied is irreplaceable. This month we celebrate the life and work of the late ‘godmother of the French New Wave’ with what is arguably her masterwork.

Having delivered one of the great lead performances of the decade in Maurice Pialat’s brittle 1983 teen movie, A Nos Amours, Sandrine Bonnaire once more shows herself as a master of playing indefatigable and free-spirited women masking deep wells of fragility and confusion.

Set against the frigid winter landscape of rural France, it follows Mona (Bonnaire), a complex and contradictory drifter, who survives on handouts and ephemeral liaisons with strangers. Agnès Varda’s splintered portrait of the enigmatic woman is told through flashbacks of those who encounter her.

Among the finest films of the 1980s, Varda’s powerful story of a young female drifter moving beyond the bounds of society remains essential viewing.

The film will be introduced by Dr Paul Sutton, who will stay for the end of the film for a post-screening discussion in the front-tier of the downstairs seating area.
